This very old village of 4,500 inhabitants, typical of Occitanie, will charm you with its architecture and its little river paths. It’s inland from the Languedoc that you’ll find the true meaning of our culture and soul.

A traditional town on the banks of the Hérault river

Discover the historic center

Nestled inland, the village of Bessan is ideal for relaxing strolls, and for anyone wishing to discover a historic center steeped in Hérault traditions. In its historic center, you can wander the cobbled streets, take in the mansions and Romanesque church that bear witness to the town’s rich historical past.

TheBessan Tourist Office offers a tour of the historic center to discover all its nooks and crannies:

  • The tour starts from the promenade, an ancient ball game and ancestor of the tambourine.
  • The former consular house, rebuilt in 1720.
  • Place de la République, so named in 1894 after the installation of a fountain topped by a statue of Marianne. The square is surrounded by many old houses.
  • Saint-Pierre Church, with its remarkable Romanesque apse and wooden and marble altarpiece.
  • You’ll discover beautiful mansion facades, including that of the “Jacomel de Cauvigny” family. Jacomel de Cauvigny, adorned with ironwork.
  • The Porte Saint-Pierre was equipped with a drawbridge in the 16thᵉ century.

On the banks of the Hérault, you can see the ruins of Moulin Bladier.

Bessan remains a lively town, with local festivals and events all year round. Don’t miss its traditional market on Tuesdays and Sundays, as well as its rich heritage of legends and folklore, including the Donkey, the totemic animal celebrated in August.

With vineyards on both sides of the town forming part of its emblematic activity, you won’t want to miss out on Rosé de Bessan, a genuine local specialty. During your stay in Bessan, you’ll have the opportunity to combine historical discoveries and tastings with a boat trip on the Hérault river.
