The specific geographical features of the Languedoc-Roussillon region
The Languedoc-Roussillon region is located in southeastern France. Its mountains and plains join to form an amphitheater facing the sea. The region comprises four seaside departments –Hérault, Gard,Aude and Pyrénées Occidentales– and one department, Lozère, in the Languedoc hinterland.
This geographical specificity gives the region many tourist attractions. Indeed, it’s easy to alternate between lazing on Mediterranean beaches and strolling through towns with a rich heritage, or discovering remarkable natural sites and the most beautiful villages of the Hérault, in the hinterland.
Proof of this is that Occitanie is still ranked in the top 3 of France’s favorite regions, and is one of France’s most popular tourist areas.
Another advantage is the region’s Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot summers. So it’s great to be able to discover the region in any season, at a campsite that’s open all year round. in Languedoc-Roussillon.

Must-see attractions in Occitanie
Let’s start with the Hérault department, which in itself is full of surprises.
Montpellier, capital of the Hérault region, is easy to visit on foot or by bike. Take a stroll around the famous Place de la Comédie, and note the alternating styles of the different districts: medieval alleyways where it’s pleasant to stroll, and architectural feats signed by the greatest architects.
After a visit to this beautiful city, breathe in the fresh iodine air at nearby La Grande-Motte, another must-see destination in the Hérault region. 7 km of sandy beaches and numerous water sports activities await you.
Adjoining the Hérault, the Gard department also boasts some magnificent sites. Don’t miss the towns of Nîmes , with its famous arena, and the fortified town of Aigues-Mortes, where you can discover the salt industry at the heart of the Camargue tradition.
Your route now continues in the Pyrénées-Orientales. A change of scenery with the majestic Pic du Canigou, the charming village and port of Collioure, a must-see in the département, or the Orgues de l’Ille-sur-Têt, with its impressive and spectacular natural rock formations.
One of the Languedoc region’s must-see attractions and part of its identity is undoubtedly the Camargue. Continuing further south-east in the Gard towards the Rhône, you enter the heart of the Camargue. Discover Arles and the famous Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, renowned as the Camargue capital.
After these superb visits, it’s now time to think about having something to eat…

Gastronomy in Pays d’Oc
In addition to its tourist attractions, the Languedoc-Roussillon region offers unique local flavors. Each département has its own culinary specialties. With the region’s delicacies, you can put together an excellent menu.
A tielle sétoise or a salad of anchovies for starters, a cassoulet from Castelnaudary or a brandade de morue for the main course, and a pélardon or a petit nîmois (goat’s milk cheeses) for the cheese.
To round off this entirely regional meal, indulge in a tasty Catalan cream and juicy Roussillon apricots, all washed down (in moderation, of course) with the famous Languedoc wines.
