Sète, a festive and authentic city on the Mediterranean coast
Sète is located in southeastern France on the Mediterranean coast. It is easily accessible from all major French cities. Sète is 30 minutes from Montpellier airport, which connects to Paris in 1 hour.
Nicknamed the “Venice of Languedoc”, Sète and its fishing port were founded by Louis XIV in 1666 to give a maritime opening to the Canal du Midi. A stroll through some of the town’s districts will give you a better understanding of its history and the life of its inhabitants in days gone by.
Such is the case of the La Pointe-Courte district, where fishermen settled in the 19th century, and which still retains a special atmosphere with its bright colors.
Another of Sète’s must-see neighborhoods is the Quartier-Haut, perched on the hillside. Nicknamed “Le Petit Naples” (Little Naples) because of the large community of Italians who live here, or “Le petit Montmartre” (Little Montmartre) because of the many artists who live here and exhibit their work.
