Salagou lake and Mourèze cirque
Located in theHérault department, the Salagou valley and lake and the cirque de Mourèze form an exceptional landscape. You’ll be amazed by the geological wealth and biodiversity of this Natura 2000 area. These splendid sites are among the must-sees of the Hérault hinterland, to be discovered in every season, from our campsite near Vias Le Domaine Sainte Véziane.
Discovering a lunar environment at the cirque de Mourèze
The rocks of the cirque de Mourèze make this place incredible. The eroded dolomitic white rocks are an invitation to contemplate, and the signposted footpaths allow you to wander through this lunar setting.
The Cirque de Mourèze is ideal for a family outing. Who, young or old, will be able to identify the Bear, the Shepherd, the Sphinx, the Organs or the Cerberus? Here, even the rocks have names!
This Natura 2000 area is home to numerous plant species and protected birds, including Bonelli’s eagle, Great horned owl, etc.
For a panoramic view of the cirque and the village of Mourèze, head for the Courtinals belvedere. This walk is accessible to all, and offers a panoramic view of the site.
More experienced hikers can climb Mount Liausson. It’s a safe, signposted 7 km round trip, with a steep climb to the summit. But once you’ve reached the top, what a reward! You’ll be able to admire a breathtaking view of Lac de Salagou.
Mourèze circus
Le Salagou: a getaway to the largest lake in the Hérault region
Just 2 km from the cirque de Mourèze, Lac de Salagou is a completely different landscape. Surrounded by hills of red earth, this expanse of water offers a palette of incredible colors in every season. The contrast between the water of the lake and the surrounding arid landscape is striking.
This lake, the largest in the Hérault department, boasts unique geological riches. It is one of the few places in the world where the remains of four geological eras can be observed in a single location. The lake is 7 kilometers long and covers 750 hectares.
It has a perimeter of 28 km and can reach a depth of 45 metres in places.

Things to do in this major French site
Whether you’re in the Cirque de Mourèze or Lac de Salagou, there’s no shortage of activities, whatever the season. In this natural setting, you’ll be spoilt for choice, on land, on water or in the air!
Walking and cycling enthusiasts will have a great time on the safe, signposted trails. Circuit n°12 des berges du Salagou (6 km) and circuit n°13 Les Vailhés (6 km) are accessible to all, with few changes in altitude. The perfect opportunity to discover the unique geology of the area and the beauty of the scenery at your own pace and with your family.
The cirque de Mourèze also attracts rock-climbing and via ferrata enthusiasts, who can enjoy the lunar landscape.
The Lac du Salagou offers a wide range of water sports (pedal-boating, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing) to enjoy the beauty of this listed site.
Finally, to admire the whole site from a different angle, don’t hesitate to take to the skies and try your hand at paragliding– thrills guaranteed for an unforgettable experience in one of the most beautiful places to discover in Languedoc-Roussillon.
